Vermicomposting Annex

The worm bin experiment is going well. And I guess the juicer purchase is as well. Our garbage output is down about 50%, but the initial worm bin is at maximum capacity, and the worms are going nuts. So I took an old 20 gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck garbage can and drilled 15 or so 1/2 inch holes in the bottom, 20 or so in a 4 inch band around the top, and maybe 15 in a ring on the edge of the lid. This is the “Rough Vermicomposting Annex 2008″

Then we shredded 2 editions of the Seattle Times in the shredder and I threw that in the bottom and added a few handfuls of mushroom compost, watered it down and mixed it up, then squeezed out the excess water. Then I transfered 50 or so worms and some really nasty stuff from the other bin to it and closed it up. It will be the composer for the juicer by-products. The pulp seems to breakdown very fast because it is already ground up and aerated, and the worms love it.

Then I decided I needed more worms so I ordered 3 more pounds from Worms Wrangler. I feel that the amount of worms per pound is a much better deal than the local supplier.

Thinking of getting a kit for vermicomposting. I might just end up putting it on my list. Would you suggest going to the multi tray installations or just a simple box?
