We have Worms

by The Scribe on May 4, 2008

Today I built a worm bin, our first foray into vermicomposting. The boy and I then went to Sky nursery and bought some red worms (which I dont think I got a very good deal on), and added them to the bin.

The bin: I built it all from recycled wood from the wood pile in the backyard. Cedar fence boards, some 1x2s, and my nail gun and some wood glue.

The worms: Red worms, will eat any vegetable matter. No meat, no bones, nothing fatty. I needed 2 pounds or so. Would have cost me $60. I bought 1.5 pounds. I then ordered some online. I didn’t get that many for my money from Sky nursery. We will see how many I get from the online source.

The compost: I mixed coconut fiber, mushroom compost, shredded newsprint and water together and then added the worms. We will see how it goes.

We then placed it in the shade on the side of the shed I built last summer.
